Dear Members of the Board of Finance,

We, the undersigned parents and guardians of students in Stamford Public Schools, write to express our deep concern and profound disappointment in the recent decision to reject the contract for the schematic design of the new Roxbury K-8 school. We represent a large majority of parents whose children attend Stamford’s public schools, and we feel compelled to advocate for their basic right to a safe and modern learning environment.

The Roxbury school, now over 70 years old, is long overdue for a rebuild. The building no longer meets the safety, health, or educational needs of our children. Its deteriorating condition is not just inconvenient—it’s dangerous and unacceptable. By failing to approve the necessary steps to move forward with this project, the Board is not only neglecting a pressing infrastructure issue but also sending a message that the well-being and future of our public school children are not a priority.

As stated by city leaders, "One of our administration's foremost priorities is to build school facilities that meet the needs of our students and teachers while also providing a safe and healthy learning environment." Yet, the decision to block this vital project contradicts this priority and undermines the very foundation of our school system’s mission. It is well known that schools in poor condition negatively affect student outcomes, from academic performance to overall well-being.

The Roxbury school community is already feeling the effects of years of underinvestment. Classrooms are outdated, infrastructure is crumbling, and the facility is failing to meet basic safety and environmental standards. We have seen firsthand how neglected investments in our schools have devastating consequences, and it is cruel to put the future of this project—and the well-being of our children—at further risk.

This decision cannot stand. As parents and taxpayers, we demand that you reconsider your position and prioritize the health, safety, and education of Stamford's children. The Roxbury rebuild is not just a financial decision—it is a moral one. When we fail to invest in our schools, we fail our children and our entire community. The long-term cost of allowing this project to be delayed or scrapped altogether will far outweigh the immediate financial considerations. We are sure the Board is aware of the national crisis in public school enrollment. Declines in enrollment lead to school closures that disproportionately impact elementary schools and students most at risk for not completing high school. Connecticut has seen the same trend, and a decision that derails this project will only further alienate families who want to remain in the public school system yet see no reciprocal commitment in children and communities from the city, driving them towards other options. Our children deserve better, and our city deserves a school system that reflects its commitment to its youngest and most vulnerable residents.

We urge you to act in the best interest of the community and approve this project without further delay. Anything less would show a lack of care for the public school children and the future of Stamford.

Nosotros, los padres abajo firmantes y tutores de los estudiantes de las Escuelas Públicas de Stamford, escribimos para expresar nuestra profunda preocupación y profunda decepción por la reciente decisión de rechazar el contrato para el diseño esquemático de la nueva escuela Roxbury K-8. Representamos a una gran mayoría de padres cuyos hijos asisten a las escuelas públicas de Stamford y nos sentimos obligados a defender su derecho básico a un entorno de aprendizaje seguro y moderno.

 

La escuela de Roxbury, que ahora tiene más de 70 años, debería haber sido reconstruida hace mucho tiempo. El edificio ya no satisface las necesidades de seguridad, salud o educación de nuestros niños. Su estado de deterioro no sólo es inconveniente, sino que es peligroso e inaceptable. Al no aprobar los pasos necesarios para avanzar con este proyecto, la Junta no sólo está descuidando un problema apremiante de infraestructura, sino que también envía el mensaje de que el bienestar y el futuro de nuestros niños de las escuelas públicas no son una prioridad.

 

Como afirmaron los líderes de la ciudad, "Una de las principales prioridades de nuestra administración es construir instalaciones escolares que satisfagan las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes y maestros y al mismo tiempo proporcionen un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro y saludable" Sin embargo, la decisión de bloquear este proyecto vital contradice esta prioridad y socava los cimientos mismos de la misión de nuestro sistema escolar. Es bien sabido que las escuelas en malas condiciones afectan negativamente los resultados de los estudiantes, desde el rendimiento académico hasta el bienestar general.

 

La comunidad escolar de Roxbury ya está sintiendo los efectos de años de inversión insuficiente. Las aulas están obsoletas, la infraestructura se está desmoronando y las instalaciones no cumplen con los estándares básicos de seguridad y medio ambiente. Hemos visto de primera mano cómo las inversiones descuidadas en nuestras escuelas tienen consecuencias devastadoras, y es cruel poner en mayor riesgo el futuro de este proyecto y el bienestar de nuestros niños.

 

Esta decisión no puede mantenerse. Como padres y contribuyentes, le exigimos que reconsidere su posición y priorice la salud, la seguridad y la educación de los hijos de Stamford. La reconstrucción de Roxbury no es sólo una decisión financiera sino moral. Cuando no invertimos en nuestras escuelas, les fallamos a nuestros hijos y a toda nuestra comunidad. El costo a largo plazo de permitir que este proyecto se retrase o se descarte por completo superará con creces las consideraciones financieras inmediatas. Estamos seguros de que la Junta es consciente de la crisis nacional en la matrícula de escuelas públicas. La disminución de la matrícula provoca cierres de escuelas que afectan desproporcionadamente a las escuelas primarias y a los estudiantes que corren mayor riesgo de no completar la escuela secundaria. Connecticut ha visto la misma tendencia, y una decisión que descarrile este proyecto sólo alienará aún más a las familias que quieren permanecer en el sistema de escuelas públicas pero no ven ningún compromiso recíproco en los niños y las comunidades de la ciudad, impulsándolos hacia otras opciones. Nuestros niños merecen algo mejor y nuestra ciudad merece un sistema escolar que refleje su compromiso con sus residentes más jóvenes y vulnerables.

 

Le instamos a actuar en el mejor interés de la comunidad y aprobar este proyecto sin más demora. Cualquier otra cosa mostraría una falta de atención a los niños de las escuelas públicas y al futuro de Stamford.
