To all who've shown support for the cause, from signing to sharing, their dedication has not gone unnoticed. The collective question lingers: Can such a united effort make a difference? While the outcome remains uncertain, the unwavering passion and commitment of true Blue Jays fans is evident.
Watching Ross Atkins' press conference this morning, one couldn't help but feel disheartened, disappointed or even angry. Instead of displaying accountability, he seemed to shift blame onto dedicated players like Jose Berrios, Vlad, Bo, Manoah, and the manager John Schneider. More than just the deflection, it was the aloof and dismissive tone that was unsettling. Frankly, right from the get go he chose to throw players and coaches under the bus with comments like him being "Surprised at how well he was pitching" referring to Jose Berrios, his star trade acquisition and long term front end of the rotation starter and “I was surprised he was coming out” referring to the manager's decision to remove Jose, despite in the past speaking about the virtues of a collaborative approach including the reliance on analytics.
But, again, this is more than just a reaction to an isolated game. This team seems dysfunctional. Whether its how the Anthony Bass situation was handled, or the Manoah demotion, or the apparent rift between players and management, or the failure to address major weaknesses during the season, or yes, the decisions made in the playoffs and their aftermath, its clear there isn't consensus. It's clear there are people more interested in pointing fingers than finding solutions. The General Manager plays a large roll in setting the tone for the organization and needs to own much of that.
Ask yourself, Is this the leadership the Blue Jays community envisions? Is this the kind of figurehead they'd want their loved ones to rally behind? The fans deserve a leader who truly embodies their aspirations. It's clear that a change in direction is needed for the Blue Jays to truly resonate with their loyal base.
