Open an investigation into Mylan pharmaceuticals price gouging practices around the EpiPen
The Issue
In 2009, my beautiful daughter Malia was born. In 2011, after her 2nd birthday we discovered she has a deadly peanut allergy. As part of her preventative care, we purchased two packs of epinephrine-filled devices more commonly known as EpiPens at $75.00 ($150.00 without insurance) per box. Now just five years later that same dosage, in the same pen, in the same box now cost $1,300 or $1,000 after insurance. There is absolutely no justification for the price of this life-saving medicine to go up by over $1,200, an increase of over 750%, in just five years.
Without this medication, my daughter can suffer a life-threatening allergic reaction. At least one in 50 Americans has experienced anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, according to a 2014 study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
Mylan Pharmaceuticals is forcing many families to choose between this medication and other necessities, forcing families to gamble with their children's lives as many people can no longer afford this medication.
The House committee doesn't currently have an open investigation into the price of EpiPens, however, together we can force our elected officials to end the practice of price gouging on medications needed to save our children.
Please sign the petition to bring awareness around the cost of the EpiPen to help make it more affordable for families.
