Build a Champlain Tower South Memorial in Surfside, FL

The Issue

Recently in Surfside, Fl we have suffered a tragedy which was not only a local one but an international one. Champlain Towers South recently collapsed. Many people are still missing. Many resources have been deployed and the community is grateful. Many lives have been lost and over 100 more still unaccounted for.

This petition calls for the land of the Champlain Towers South to remain as a memorial. This was a mass casualty and each and everyone of those missing and deceased should be remembered. Another building should not go up where over 150 lives were possibly lost although we still have hope for a miracle that the number will be much less than that.

Part of this petition which calls for no further development in the property stems from the demolition of the former Howard Johnson which was directly south from Champlain Tower South. The demolition and construction of 87 Park Project that sits next to where the South Tower once stood had all the neighboring buildings trembling throughout construction. Many of the residents feel that the construction has affected the infrastructure of its surrounding buildings (including Champlain Tower South). Please remember the many lives lost and create a memorial in the honor of every individual lost.

This petition also calls for building regulations/requirements be revised as far as materials regulated and/or approved  for building specially along a coast line. In addition to the revision of building regulations/requirements this petition calls for the time frame of when building inspections for buildings in Florida to also be revised. A notice was given that inspections would occur every 30 years rather than 40 but that is still too much time.

Thank you.
