Ron Brooks Complex

Ron Brooks Complex
The Issue
Dr. Swinyard, Spokane Public Schools Board of Directors, and Spokane American Legion Board of Directors and Commissioners,
I am writing on behalf of the Shadle Park High School community, including each member who has endorsed this letter below, requesting to rename the baseball complex at Shadle Park High School. As Principal and proud alumnus of Shadle Park High School, I believe it is only right to honor a figure whose influence and dedication have left an indelible mark on the school's baseball program and the lives of countless individuals. In that spirit, I propose that the current baseball complex at Shadle Park High School be renamed "Al K. Jackson Field at Ron Brooks Complex" in honor of the legendary 37-year head baseball coach, Ron Brooks.
Ron Brooks was the cornerstone of Shadle Park baseball for 37 years, shaping the program into one of excellence and integrity both on and off the diamond. As an alumnus of Shadle Park High School, graduating from the Class of 1973, Ron Brooks' commitment to his alma mater has been unwavering. His impact and achievements as both a player and a coach exemplify his deep-rooted connection to the Shadle Park High School community and its baseball legacy.
During his time as head coach, Ron Brooks amassed an impressive career win-loss record of 426-348, a testament to his leadership, expertise, and dedication to both his players and the sport of baseball. His teams' accomplishments speak volumes, including three Greater Spokane League (GSL) championships, three coach of the year honors, six regional appearances, and two final-four appearances. Ron's coaching prowess not only brought success on the field but also fostered a culture of excellence and camaraderie within the Shadle Park baseball community that will endure for years to come.
Ron Brooks' coaching legacy goes beyond the confines of Shadle Park High School. His influence was and continues to be felt throughout the Greater Spokane League and across the state, as evidenced by the numerous coaches and players who have been positively impacted by his teachings and leadership. His induction into the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2008 stands as a testament to his lasting contributions to the sport. Further, following his roles coaching American Legion Baseball from 1978 – 1983, serving as an active board member of Spokane American Legion Baseball since 1990, and leading the field renovation project at Shadle Park High School – which brought the American Legion World Series to Spokane in 2010 – Ron was inducted to the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame this past October.
Beyond the accolades and victories, Ron Brooks' impact extends far beyond the realm of athletics. He has mentored multiple generations of athletes, serving as a role model, mentor, and father figure to countless young people who donned the Highlanders’ uniform. His ability to inspire and empower his players both on and off the field is a testament to his character and dedication to their personal growth and success.
Further evidenced by the remarkable achievements of his former players, over 60 athletes under his guidance went on to compete at the highest collegiate levels, with six players being selected in the MLB draft. Additionally, Ron had the honor of coaching in the all-state baseball game on two occasions, further highlighting his standing as one of the preeminent coaches in the history of the state of Washington.
It is only fitting that we honor Ron Brooks' unparalleled dedication and achievements by renaming the baseball complex in his honor. "Al K. Jackson Field at Ron Brooks Complex" would serve as a lasting tribute to a man whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of athletes and coaches to come.
I urge you to consider this proposal with the utmost sincerity and respect for Ron Brooks' legacy. The renaming of the baseball complex would not only honor a deserving individual but also serve as a reminder of the values of hard work, dedication, and community that Ron Brooks embodied throughout his illustrious career.
Thank you for your consideration of this proposal on behalf of a man who left a multi-generational, lasting impact on both the Shadle Park High School community and the Spokane baseball community alike. I am hopeful that the near future will contain a celebration of the renaming of the baseball complex in honor of Ron Brooks.
Sincerely,
Chris Dunn
