Our pets should be recognized as extensions of our families.

The Issue

On Monday evening, September 22,  I took my Maddox  - a 2 1/2 year old Great Pyrenees/Aussie Cattle Dog Red Heeler mix - on a walk - properly harnessed. She got spooked by something and like a shot wiggled out of her harness and bounded into the street. A vehicle at an excessive amount of speed hit her head on with such velocity it ripped the front license plate off the car. The driver did not slow down after impact... or stop... just kept driving. My Maddox had the will to go to our house. I petted her down to check for broken legs - no wimper or yelp. We brought her into the house, and she wanted to go outside, where she laid under her favorite bushes. Her internal injuries were massive. We stayed with her, comforting her, and my husband Michael felt her take her last breath. She crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge 21 minutes after impact.  Twenty one minutes. We wanted to file a police report - the police don't take hit and run reports on animals. Illinois does not have firm laws to punish/fine/jail individuals like Paris Fortune, IL plate #Y80 2674,  whose license plate I have in my office for what he did to my baby, my child. I have promised her that we will do everything in our power to fight for and create legislation so that swift and proper punishment will happen. Our hearts are broken - the pain is immeasurable - the anger is unparalled... but Maddox will never be gone from our hearts. Rest in peace my love.... run free and without pain across the bridge.
