Prevent killing of swans protecting nests

Prevent killing of swans protecting nests
The Issue
On April 20th, 2016, Ct. state wildlife employees killed a swan that, while protecting it's mate and nest, attacked 4 boaters. The female swan escaped but her eggs were addled to, and I quote from a Department of Energy and Environment Department (DEEP) representative, "prevent a new generation and more swans maturing where there is obviously the potential for conflict with humans".
The people of this town and surrounding area are devastated and shocked at DEEP's action. Swans have lived on the Five Mile Pond in Danielson, a town of 16,000 people in Northeastern Ct., for over 20 years. Many of us look forward to watching the swans - their graceful beauty brought a sense of calm. This is the first time there was any so called conflict with humans. During this time period, the swans were friendly before and after nesting. They interacted with those who lived on the shore, often allowing people to hand feed them, even with the swans babies present. One particular male swan would even tap at one residence back door looking for the cracked corn which they fed him.
It is quite obvious the wildlife employees never bothered to investigate the swan's history and acted overzealously in the killing the swan by snapping it's neck. Now, the female is vulnerable without here mate as she tends to her addled eggs. It is a pitiful sight. DEEP responses are to say the least, lame attempts to justify their action.
We firmly request Rob Klee, Ct. DEEP commissioner to investigate this horrible act, release employees involved, review necessity of euthanizing, reintroduce swans to Five Mile Pond and require posting where swans and other waterfowl nest here and throughout the state. Wildlife protection is their job.
We will not let this matter rest until there is a resolution.
I urge you to support this petition. The only way to make state officials aware that the public will not tolerate this abuse of wildlife.
I thank you in advance for your caring and support.
