RNO Airport employees forced to park at military base or pay for their own parking
The Issue
Employee parking at the Reno-Tahoe international airport is being moved for the 5th time in the last 4 years, Employee parking is currently on National guard way on the opposite side of the National Guard base. The parking is currently half a mile away from the terminal and about a 15 minute walk. Due to the Reno Tahoe Airport Authorities (RTAA) poor planning and pursuit of more parking spots for profit at the Employees expense they’ve decided to take back part of the land they lease to the Air National Guard and convert it to Employee parking. This change will force all Employees to take a Military background check and undergo additional fingerprinting and take training classes from the base . Employees would have to enter through the Armed gate with military personnel on a daily basis. On top of that our Employee shuttle that cut down the 15 minutes walk into a 3 minute ride will be shut down. The walk was only cut down by 1-2 minutes. The walk still being a 13 minute walk to the terminal.
There is no clear communication from the RTAA about any alternate parking for those who do not pass the screening process or consistent answers to the various tenants that occupy airport property (Airlines, TSA and Restaurant workers). The RTAA charges the tenants and/or employees for parking on a monthly basis and despite getting charged the airport puts no effort to address our concerns or treat us with any respect . This sudden move with no forethought forces the airport employees to go through unnecessary Military background checks against our will and wishes infringing our freedoms and forcing us to either submit to them or find our own parking that could be up to 36$ a day, just to be able to come to work
We the employees and tenants of this airport are against the move and urge the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority to Honor their commitment and promise that the current parking would be permanent, unless they find a permanent solution working with the tenants and unions of the workers that would satisfy their needs and concerns. The Employees and tenants service the nearly 5 million passengers that fly in and out of Reno-Tahoe international and deserve a place to park that is reasonable and equitable
