River Valley Crosswalk
The Issue
River Valley Street is becoming a safety hazard, and this needs to be addressed to prevent an accident.
The Regency Apartments are home to many members of the Meridian community that regularly shop in the Village. Many of these residents are elderly, disabled, or have young children; and accessibility is a must. Residents like these are often seen crossing the street to the village, as it is the quickest method of access to the shopping center. Parents with strollers, elderly residents in wheelchairs -- all crossing an unmarked portion of a street with increasingly dense traffic.
So long as our city population continues to grow (it grows exponentially), the density of traffic only grows thicker, and safety concerns begin to surface rapidly. The last thing anyone wants to see on this road directly in front of our home is a traffic collision involving a pedestrian.
ACHD has surveyed the area, and not only have they observed a notable amount of crossings within their scheduled times, they have also noted that the windows for crossing (sufficient time to cross between cars) are not large enough to be considered safe windows, and have thus determined a crosswalk is warranted. It is now up to the transportation commission to start a project and determine its priority -- this is the aim of this petition.
The sooner this project is begun, the sooner our residents and shoppers can be given safety and accessibility to the Village. To accomplish this, this project needs to be elevated to the list of top priorities for the commission.
Each signature on this petition is an additional reason for this project to be expedited.
