The Issue

My name is Millie and I am a junior doctor. I am really afraid about the Government's new laws against striking and what this will mean for me and my colleagues. This new law could mean that we could be fired for taking part in a strike. Last night I received my strike ballot - and voted to strike.

Growing up wanting to be a doctor, I never dreamed I would be taking part in strike action. What I have seen in my 3 years working in the NHS has broken my heart, and everyday it gets worse.

Our NHS is on the brink of collapse. Everyone in the healthcare system - from ambulance workers to doctors - are trying our best to hold the system together, on goodwill alone.  There are not enough of us and we are under back breaking pressure.

The only way to fix this is more money from the Government. The right to strike is the only way we have to get this to happen. Believe me - we have tried everything else. None of us want to be standing outside our hospitals, whilst there are patients that need us but the situation we are in is not sustainable. We need the Government to come to the negotiating table and work with us to create a plan for the future. We need the Government to commit to supporting healthcare workers. We need the Government to save our NHS.

When announcing the new law earlier this week Business Secretary Grant Shapps said: “We don't want to use this legislation but we must ensure the safety of the British public”. I would argue that if the safety of the British public was the Government’s main concern they would have properly funded our health system in the first place.

These new laws are a sinister way to limit striking powers for public sector workers. No one in the UK should lose their job for taking part in a strike. And no healthcare worker takes striking action lightly. Everyday we work to protect the public in hospitals that are overcrowded, alongside colleagues who are poorly compensated and stressed. Striking is our last resort for saving the NHS.

Please sign my petition today to help protect the right to strike in the UK.
