Dear Petitioners,
It's so frustrating to see our island become an industrialized wasteland and watch our own Senators encourage it to happen.
Bill #35-0023 to rezone a plot in Orange Grove, St. Croix to allow for concrete block manufacturing - was voted to proceed by our Senators and VETOED by our Governor. We have been waiting to see what happens as the Senate can vote to override the Governor's decision, and the vote could be tomorrow.
This business is proclaiming that it is "environmentally friendly" and all operations will be indoors. They have been blasting loud music and ads that declare "It's not concrete it's block!". However, as seen in the photo above, there is an Elkon Mix Master-30 situated behind the building which is an "On-site Concrete Batching Plant" and concrete is needed to make concrete block.
Concrete typically has a high proportion of silica content. When made a cloud of fine dust may be suspended in the air and breathing in fine particles can produce lung damage. Silicosis can be totally disabling and may lead to death.
This business has gone right ahead without waiting for the proper permits or zoning. Our Senators have a Rules Committee and a Health and Safety Committee, yet they allow rules to be broken for a business that threatens our health and safety. PLEASE TELL THEM NOT TO OVERRIDE THE VETO!!
