The RIDE ARCHIVE will offer today’s guests immersive VR simulations of decommissioned theme park rides and attractions formerly lost to the ages. Sign this petition to let Disney know you want them to make the RIDE ARCHIVE experience a reality!
Anyone who's been to a Disney park has a favorite ride, but what about all the rides that went away before their time and still linger in the childhood memories of grown-ups today? Classic rides like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or the Disneyland Skyway? Or more recent attractions like World of Motion, Horizons, or Maelstrom? Imagine if you could share the first-hand experience of these lost memories with guests today. What if we could bring back the rides of the past for current and future generations to see and hear and feel just as though they were still up and running today?
A “RIDE ARCHIVE” would offer today’s guests immersive 3-D simulations of Disney rides and attractions formerly lost to the ages, while preserving the rich creative heritage of the parks and honoring the artistic and engineering feats of Disney’s Imagineers.
Approaching the Archive, visitors would walk through an enchanted forest of retired theme park rides and artifacts overgrown with exotic flora, and a sculpture garden honoring Disney’s most celebrated Imagineers. Once inside the ride, guests will be presented with a menu screen so they can choose their ride or attraction.
Soon, they’re immersed in a VR experience that recreates the complete ride through a realistic 3-D computer-generated simulation based on original plans, photos and footage of the attraction. The audio is a remastered version of the same recording that played when the ride was originally in service.
Upon exiting, each guest receives an exclusive code that allows an app on their mobile device to download the VR experience so they can actually take the ride home with them! Guests who continue to ride the Archive can collect a new attraction each time they ride.
Finally, a gift shop will offer authentic, tangible pieces of real theme park history ranging from priceless to affordable, as well as reproductions of vintage souvenirs and candy.
Outside the Archive, guests can also collect rides by going to the original location where a ride once stood. Once nearby, the app will notify the guest that a ride is available for download making the quest for new rides a worldwide scavenger hunt, spanning across all the Disney Parks around the globe!
Enhancements to the Archive are made easily and inexpensively by adding new simulated attractions and updated content without the need for additional construction, while the take-home component taps into the growing consumer VR market projected to be worth at least 16 billion dollars by 2020. These simulations will also create easily-interchangeable sponsorship opportunities as old rides can now find new sponsors.
Moving forward, as newer attractions are decommissioned, additional content can be made using live-action HD footage of rides using today's VR camera rigs instead of relying on CGI recreations.
For both Disney superfans and amusement park enthusiasts alike, The RIDE ARCHIVE will be a dream come true, uniting the memories of all generations, old and young, across the span of time.
Good people of Disney, please embrace “the future of preserving the past” and make The RIDE ARCHIVE a reality.
