UPDATE – 2,000 SIGNATURES REACHED, YET THE UNIVERSITY OF PADUA STILL FAILS TO PROVIDE A CONCRETE RESPONSE TO THE DEMANDS OF IRANIAN STUDENTS: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3 – JOIN THE SIT-IN OUTSIDE PALAZZO DEL BO!

Thanks to your active and continuous support, the petition to safeguard the Right to Study of Iranian students at the University of Padua is close to reaching 2,000 signatures! This is not just a number. It is a strong, collective, and unified voice of solidarity that institutions - starting with the University of Padua and ESU (the Regional Agency for the Right to Study) - can no longer pretend to ignore.

And yet, we are forced to acknowledge a bitter reality. Considerable time has elapsed since our initial requests. However, despite generic declarations of solidarity and the commitments undertaken in recent months, the University of Padua has still not implemented any concrete measures to support the Right to Study of Iranian students.

As is well known, the ongoing military conflict involving Iran has created a genuine state of emergency. Students are facing insurmountable administrative hurdles and international banking restrictions. Furthermore, a deepening economic crisis is severely affecting their financial standing, adding to an increasingly heavy psychological and human burden.

This exceptional crisis jeopardizes the future and the very continuity of Iranian students’ academic careers. Faced with such a reality, we expected concrete and timely responses from the institutions, starting with the Rector of the University of Padua, Prof. Daniela Mapelli.

Instead, beyond a few marginal measures, nothing substantial has been done. Not even the basic administrative streamlining for the submission of mandatory documents required for study grants has been implemented. These measures should have been the starting point. After all, it is a glaring reality that the public administration in Iran is currently not functioning and flight connections remain disrupted.

Today, we must strongly denounce the fact that Iranian students have been left alone. They have been abandoned in the complete silence and institutional inertia of those who, by institutional mandate, are required to protect and guarantee the Right to Study. Safeguarding this right means protecting the very essence of the Higher Education Institution. This duty also includes preserving an indispensable asset of the University of Padua: the scientific and cultural contribution of international students, and of Iranian students in particular.

But we will not give up. If the institutions have so far proven inadequate in addressing the situation, it is time to publicly denounce this state of affairs and bring our demands directly to the Padua city's squares.

To denounce this abandonment and demand concrete action, the Committee has organized a public sit-in. It will take place on Wednesday, June 3, at 11:30 a.m. in Via VIII Febbraio, outside Palazzo del Bo, the headquarters of the University of Padua. During the protest, we will explain the situation in more detail. We will also request that a delegation of protesters be received by the University Administration to officially present our demands.

We call on everyone who took a minute to sign this petition: students, academic staff, associations, and citizens. Join us in the streets. Spread the word about this grave situation—including by word of mouth—and discuss it with your colleagues and friends.

Your presence on Wednesday, June 3, will be essential. It will show the University that these are not the demands of an isolated minority, but of a united community supported by thousands of Paduan citizens.

This community is not asking for privileges or preferential treatment. We are solely requesting the minimum necessary measures during an unprecedented international crisis. Such provisions would allow Iranian students to navigate an extremely difficult situation without jeopardizing their degree programmes.

Grazie al vostro attivo e costante supporto, la petizione a tutela del diritto allo studio degli studenti iraniani dell'Università di Padova sta per raggiungere le 2.000 firme!
Non si tratta solo di un numero: è una voce forte, corale e solidale che le Istituzioni, a partire dall’Università di Padova e dall’Esu di Padova, non possono più fingere di non sentire.
Eppure, ci troviamo costretti a dover constatare una realtà amara. Nonostante il molto tempo trascorso dalle nostre prime richieste, le generiche dichiarazioni di solidarietà e gli impegni assunti nei mesi scorsi, l’Università di Padova non ha ancora predisposto interventi concreti a sostegno del diritto allo studio degli studenti iraniani.

Come è noto, il protrarsi del conflitto militare che coinvolge l’Iran ha generato una situazione di vera e propria emergenza: ostacoli burocratici insormontabili, blocchi bancari internazionali, una crisi economica sempre più grave che si ripercuote sulla situazione economica degli studenti e un carico psicologico e umano sempre più difficile da sostenere. 
Di fronte a questa situazione di crisi eccezionale, che mette a rischio il futuro e la stessa continuità dei percorsi formativi degli studenti iraniani, ci aspettavamo risposte concrete e tempestive dalle Istituzioni, a partire della Rettrice dell’Università di Padova Prof.ssa Daniela Mapelli.

Invece, tranne qualche misura marginale, nulla è stato realmente fatto. Neppure quelle semplificazioni burocratiche per la presentazione dei documenti indispensabili per le borse di studio che avrebbero dovuto essere il punto di partenza, considerato il fatto evidente che ancora oggi la pubblica amministrazione in Iran non funziona e neppure regolarmente i collegamenti aerei.
Oggi dobbiamo denunciare con forza che gli studenti iraniani sono stati lasciati soli, abbandonati nel totale silenzio ed immobilismo di chi, per missione istituzionale, dovrebbe tutelare e garantire il diritto allo studio e con esso, la natura stessa dell’Istituzione Universitaria. Ma anche preservare quello che è un patrimonio irrinunciabile dell’Università di Padova: il contributo scientifico e culturale degli studenti internazionali e di quelli iraniani in particolare.

Ma noi non ci arrendiamo. Se le istituzioni finora non si sono mostrate all’altezza della situazione, è il momento di denunciare la situazione e di portare le nostre istanze direttamente nelle piazze della città di Padova.

Per denunciare questo abbandono e pretendere risposte con i fatti, il Comitato ha organizzato un sit-in pubblico che si terrà mercoledì 3 giugno alle ore 11,30 in via VIII Febbraio davanti al Palazzo del Bo, sede dell’Università di Padova. Al sit-in spiegheremo più dettagliatamente la situazione e chiederemo che una delegazione dei manifestanti sia ricevuta negli uffici dell’Università per presentare le nostre richieste. 

Facciamo appello a ciascuno di voi che ha dedicato un minuto per firmare questa petizione: studenti, docenti, associazioni, cittadini. Scendete in piazza al nostro fianco, diffondete notizie su questa grave situazione, anche con il passaparola, parlatene con i vostri colleghi e amici.
La vostra presenza mercoledì 3 giugno sarà fondamentale per far capire all'Università che non si tratta delle richieste di una minoranza isolata, ma una comunità unita e supportata da migliaia di cittadini padovani.
Una comunità che non chiede trattamenti di favore o privilegi, ma soltanto quelle minime misure necessarie in una situazione di crisi internazionale - per certi versi senza precedenti – che permetta agli studenti di affrontare una situazione difficilissima e di non compromettere il proprio percorso di studi.

Non c’è più tempo. Vi aspettiamo mercoledì 3 giugno dalle ore 11,30 davanti al Bo. Il diritto allo studio è diritto al futuro!
