PREVENT CHILD HUS DEATHS AND CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

PREVENT CHILD HUS DEATHS AND CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE
The Issue
Recently, there was an outbreak of e. coli linked to a farm in Lebanon, CT. Most recent reports are showing 34 cases. Of these cases, 3 young children have already developed the life-threatening Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. This has a 5-10 percent mortality rate, and still many others are left with chronic kidney disease. A couple of years ago, my daughter developed HUS after a case of e. coli. The severity of the case of HUS depends on early detection, yet many doctors do not warn parents about this possible complication or tell them signs to look for. My daughter was one of the lucky ones who needed only hospitalization and a blood transfusion. I was actually told, "What do you want us to do...tell every patient with e.coli about this rare complication?" I said, "Yes, that's correct." There are now 3 cases of HUS out of the 34 reported cases linked to the farm in Lebanon...so far. That doesn't seem so rare, especially when it's YOUR child. I want doctors to be required to tell all patients (or parents of minor children - most cases occur in young children) diagnosed with e. coli about the life-threatening complication that can develop called HUS and the signs to look for.
