The Issue

Since the establishment of the Heavy Industry zone (I-2) on Industrial Park in 1985, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors has continued to allow residential development around this area. Over the years, they have authorized zoning changes to Light Residential (R-1) and Medium Residential (R-2), resulting in an influx of new homes being constructed. This has caused a significant population increase, with approximately 2,000 homes now accommodating around 6,000 residents within just a two-mile radius of the Heavy Industry zone.

While growth and development are essential for a thriving community, the proximity of these significant residential areas to the Heavy Industry zone poses potential hazards and inconveniences for residents. Heavy industries often come with pollution concerns, noise issues, and increased traffic, all of which can negatively affect quality of life. Now, the proposal for an asphalt plant to be established in this area threatens to exacerbate these problems.

The current zoning policies which allow such developments are outdated in this context. These policies do not reflect the massive residential growth around the Industrial Park, nor do they consider the impact on the environment and the health of the community. It is crucial that we prioritize the wellbeing of our residents by ensuring that our zoning laws align with current realities and future growth plans.

I urge the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors to rezone the unoccupied lots on Industrial Park and County Road #166 from Heavy Industrial (I-2) to Light Industrial (I-1). This change would prevent the establishment of new heavy industrial projects, such as the proposed asphalt plant, that are inappropriate for this increasingly residential area. By doing so, we can protect local families, preserve our environment, and promote a healthier, more balanced community development.

Please join me in calling on the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors to act responsibly and prioritize the needs of its residents by signing this petition. Let’s protect our community’s health and way of life by supporting this rezoning initiative.
