Monday night, we tried our best to convince the Planning Commission that an asphalt plant was a bad fit for north Oxford. We tried to convince them that more than 560 Lafayette County residents signing a petition means something.
The commission voted unanimously to deny recommending the rezoning of unoccupied lots in the Industrial Park from I-2 Heavy Industrial to I-1 Light Industrial. Rae Garrett, Chad Cregar, Tyler Gore, Kate Rosson, and James Thompson were not moved one inch by a petition of 560+ their neighbors.
The message we received was that zoning was done in 2018, and the 30 year lease for the asphalt plant was already signed in December, and therefore absolutely nothing can be done. I don't accept that, and I hope you don't either. We will continue to fight for north Oxford and the College Hill communities and continue to fight against backdoor, sweetheart deals to place an asphalt plant in the middle of the largest concentration of population in the County and 1 mile upstream from a brand new school system.
