Rewild Parliament House: A Call for Native Australian Grasslands.

The issue

Parliament House lawn is covered with Couch grass, a species not native to Australia which at times has been listed as an invasive weed in some Australian States and Territories.

While Couch grass is common in urban landscaping, it consumes more water, more fertilizer, requires more maintenance, and does not contribute to the biodiversity and resilience of our native ecosystem.

We propose a change: to replace the lawn on Parliament House with native Australian grasslands. Just imagine Parliament House lawn covered by a vibrant sea of native grasslands and flowers. A place where people can not only see government in action but also experience and celebrate Australia's unique identity through its native flora; and perhaps be inspired to make similar environmentally sustainable changes in their own backyards.

Native grasslands are an ecological high priority in the ACT. Rewilding Parliament House would be a significant symbol of the government's commitment to reverse the changes that have led to grasslands being critically endangered.

  • The replacement of couch grass at Parliament House with native Australian flora.
  • The establishment of a native Australian grassland ecosystem on Parliament House lawn.
  • The promotion of environmentally sustainable leadership and practices at all government institutions, beginning at the National level.
