Revote for the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2027
The Issue
Should the 7 Wonders of the World really be decided by a marketing budget?
In 2007, people around the world voted to choose the New 7 Wonders of the World. It was a huge global event that got millions of people excited about history, architecture, travel, and some of the most incredible places on Earth.
Now, as the 20th anniversary approaches in 2027, we think it’s time to do it again.
Not because the original seven should be erased, but because the world now has an opportunity to create a new edition of the list with a more balanced and transparent voting process.
We’ve visited all seven of the current New 7 Wonders, along with many of the other landmarks that were nominated, and it made us curious about how the original list was actually chosen.
The original vote allowed people to vote more than once, and countries and tourism boards were able to run major campaigns encouraging people to support their own landmarks. Some countries were simply much better positioned to mobilize huge numbers of votes.
There is nothing wrong with countries proudly supporting their landmarks. They were using the rules available to them.
But it also meant that the final results could be influenced by which nominees had the strongest marketing campaigns, rather than only by which places people around the world considered the most extraordinary.
That left remarkable finalists such as Angkor Wat, the Acropolis of Athens, Hagia Sophia, Stonehenge, and many others outside the final seven.
For the 20th anniversary, we are asking the New7Wonders Foundation to hold a new worldwide vote with updated rules designed to give every nominee an equal opportunity.
That could include one verified vote per person, no paid voting, clear limits on paid campaigns intended to influence the result, transparent vote counting, and equal visibility for every finalist.
The original 2007 winners can remain an important part of history. But twenty years later, we have the technology to make a global vote more representative, transparent, and fair.
Add your name if you want the world to vote again for the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2027.
