Revoke the UK Work Visas of Footballers Who Displayed a Political Banner Claiming the Falkland Islands

Following Argentina’s victory over England in the FIFA World Cup semi-final, several Argentine footballers publicly celebrated with a banner claiming that the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina. We believe this was a deliberate political statement made on one of the world’s biggest sporting stages and was inappropriate in an international sporting event.

The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory. The people of the Falkland Islands have exercised their internationally recognised right to self-determination and, in the 2013 referendum, overwhelmingly voted to remain British. Their democratic wishes should be respected.

The Falklands War remains deeply significant to the United Kingdom. In 1982, 255 British service personnel and three Falkland Islanders lost their lives, while many more British and Argentine personnel suffered life-changing physical and psychological injuries. The sacrifices made by those who served, and the wishes of the Falkland Islanders themselves, deserve respect. We believe that publicly promoting a territorial claim over the Islands is deeply disrespectful to those who served, those who lost loved ones and the Islanders themselves.

Many of the footballers involved earn their living in the United Kingdom under work visas granted by the UK Government. We believe it is unacceptable for individuals who have been given the privilege of working in this country to publicly promote a territorial claim against British sovereign territory.

We therefore call on the Home Secretary to revoke the UK work visas of any footballers who knowingly participated in displaying or promoting this political banner. Holding a UK work visa is a privilege, not a right, and those who publicly challenge British sovereignty should not continue to benefit from that privilege.

Sport should bring people together, not be used as a platform for political provocation. Revoking the work visas of those involved would send a clear message that the United Kingdom stands by the democratic wishes of the Falkland Islanders, honours the sacrifices made in their defence, and will not tolerate the use of international sport to promote territorial claims against British sovereign territory.
