Revoke the Rohnert Park Ordinance Banning Hen Ownership

The Issue

Our story begins with a more sustainable way of living, aided by our own tiny flock of hens in Rohnert Park, CA. The desire to include more variety of animal in our home and the ability to harvest our own food led to the decision of raising a few egg laying hens of our own. Unfortunately, a neighbor lacking the decency of friendly conversation chose to raise a formal complaint against us instead. This action had a profound and unintended effect: the city responded to their complaint, leaving us with a violation notice and a heartbreak.

One of our chicks developed into a rooster, resulting in crowing that was likely irritating to our neighbors (as it was to ourselves). Responsibly, we were already prepared to relocate him, in search of adopters, to spare our neighbors that early wake-up call. However, before we were able to find a suitable home, we were notified of the code compliance compliant and received the shocking news that not just roosters, but even our hens were prohibited by municipal ordinance. This seemed quite unreasonable since hens are pretty docile and create no nuisance. And yet, we were ordered to remove them.

We believe the rulings on hen ownership need revision. Our hen's home is sanitary and well maintained. Our children adore them, and they provide a substantial source of nutrients. There is no need to prohibit self-sufficiency. Across the country, urban chicken farming is growing, with truly large cities having lifted bans based on rational and pragmatic decision making. Why is Rohnert Park, a small city set in a rural environment, one of the only towns in Sonoma County not allowed the same freedoms as others? It is a government overreach, unwelcome in our small community.

Rohnert Park, let us encourage self-provision and endorse a return to nature, even within city limits. We urge the city to amend the ordinance and permit sustainable practices like ours to exist where they cause no nuisance. Let's allow hen ownership within Rohnert Park as a means to self-reliant living, ensure food security, and foster a sense of community around shared values. Help us protect our right to a more sustainable lifestyle. Sign this petition to repeal the ordinance banning hen ownership within city limits. Show your support by signing below.
