Revoke the recent Vermont title requirement

The Issue

I am a born and raised Vermonter who has always had a passion for driving older vehicles. My first car was a 1996 Subaru Legacy that I bought for $800 and fixed up. Since then, I’ve bought several older vehicles with plenty of remaining life on them.  This recent law requiring vehicles older than 15 years to be titled is not just an inconvenience, but also a threat to our way of life.

A quick drive through most towns in this state will reveal several backyards with “parts” vehicles or simply cars and trucks that were parked and never run since. Many of them it would be near impossible to get a title or even a recent registration for.

This new legislation most heavily impacts impoverished communities and middle class residents. Vermonters with lower credit scores, minimum wage jobs, and other income difficulties are now barred access to a plethora of used vehicles that would assist them in holding jobs and access to transportation. The additional title fees on older vehicles purchased with a title adds yet another financial burden

Another possibly unforeseen consequence is the environmental impact. In recent years, the powers that be have made an effort to lower Vermonters’ environmental footprint by strongly encouraging recycling. Continuing to use old vehicles is far more responsible than manufacturing new ones.

We need your help in overturning this law that infringes upon our rights as vehicle owners and lovers of classic automobiles. Let's stand together as proud Vermonters against this unnecessary regulation that threatens our way of life.
