Revoke the Law Banning Phone Usage in Schools

The Issue

As a concerned parent living in Indianapolis, IN, USA, I am deeply affected by the new law that prohibits students from having and using phones in school. This law not only hinders my ability to stay connected with my children during school hours but also infringes on their right to communicate freely.

Research indicates that 95% of teens have access to a smartphone and 45% say they are online 'almost constantly' (Pew Research Center). While it is important to ensure that these devices do not disrupt the learning environment, an outright ban seems excessive and unreasonably restrictive. A more balanced approach could involve setting specific times when phone usage is permitted or encouraging responsible use of technology as part of our children's education.

Moreover, phones can be crucial for safety reasons. In case of emergencies or unexpected situations at school, students should be able to reach out for help immediately. The current law makes this impossible.

I urge lawmakers in Indianapolis to reconsider this decision and find a solution that respects both educational integrity and personal communication rights. Please sign this petition if you believe in maintaining open lines of communication between parents and their children during school hours.
