Revoke the Decision to Remove Practice-IT, A Vital Resource for UW CS Students

The Issue

I am a dedicated student at the University of Washington, aspiring to join the CS TA section. To accomplish this, my peers and I heavily depend on Practice-IT, our online learning resource tailored for introductory Java courses (CSE 121, 122, 123). It's more than just a tool; it’s an integral part of our learning journey.

Unfortunately, due to the UW not being able to find the proper maintainers, Practice-IT faces elimination. According to a current CS teaching assistant coordinator he wishes "we could preserve it though, especially for the AP CSA and UW in the high school students who frequently use it"

According to the same TA Coordinator, the decision is rooted in money/maintenance rather than distancing us from Stuart Reges, showing the university's misunderstanding of the importance of the website.

The impact of such a removal will be felt heavily, not only by me, but by hundreds of us who use this platform for self-paced learning. The absence of Practice-IT will impede our progress, mastery of concepts, and our eventual ability to support and teach course materials effectively.

Our frustration is not just towards the loss of a learning aid, but also the loss of personal archives. Practice-IT allows us to revisit our completed problems, reinforcing knowledge and serving as a reference for future endeavors. In the absence of this, we face the daunting task of manually preserving every task.

This move not only affects today's learners, but also undermines the burgeoning Washington CS landscape, given how integral Practice-IT has been to our growth and learning.

We request the University of Washington administration to reconsider this decision, keeping the welfare and academic progress of its students at heart. It's time for student voices to be heard.

Please sign this petition to support UW students and ensure continuity of accessible and efficient coding education. Together, we can make a difference.
