Child abuse is an insidious crime that leaves lifelong scars, not only on the victims but also on families and communities. I've witnessed the devastating consequences of abuse too many times to remain silent. Each case has left a profound impact on my life, strengthening my resolve to protect our children and ensure they are safe from harm. This is why the recent decision to exempt religious confessions from mandatory reporting laws is deeply concerning.

The Labour government's new legislation aims to protect children by requiring mandatory reporting of abuse disclosures. However, it astonishingly includes a provision that exempts priests and clergy from reporting such heinous crimes when confessed in the 'seal of penance'. This exemption creates a dangerous loophole that could allow child abusers to evade justice, putting more children at risk.

Statistics from the NSPCC reveal that over half a million children in the UK suffer from abuse each year. This alarming figure makes it evident that robust measures are crucial. The mandatory reporting of abuse should be applied universally, including within the confessional, to prevent further trauma to vulnerable children.

The current exception undercuts the primary intent of the legislation and sends the wrong message about the society we aspire to be: one that prioritizes the protection of the most vulnerable. Legal obligations should not be swayed by religious contexts, particularly when human rights and children's safety are at stake.

We must urge the government to reconsider this dangerous exemption and demand that the mandatory reporting laws apply without exception. It is essential to close any possible escape routes for abusers, no matter where abuse confessions occur. Our children deserve to grow up in a world where leaders are unequivocally committed to their safety.
