The Issue

This petition has been created as a means of pushing the University of Reading, and Vice chancellor Robert Van de Noort, to revoke and publically apologise for their transphobic public statement regarding the use of toilets on the University of Reading campus.

Not only has this reverberated harmful rhetoric towards the trans community, but has caused distress and an unsafe environment for many students.

The statement of trans students using specific toilets, and exclusion from, has come from guidance, rather than law. Therefore, the university has massively overstepped, directly going against the Human Rights and Equality Act and the EHRC.

• This is not about safety. This is blatant transphobia. Jeopardising the safety and sense of belonging of trans students at the university

• This is not about inclusivity. The segregation of trans students from public and everyday spaces is not inclusive!

•This is not only harmful to the trans community, but to disabled students, women and more. This will take a toll of disabled spaces, put more trans/cis women in danger, propagate myths around trans people and cause division.

•The demand of trans students using unisex toilets, additionally contributes to the idea that trans people are unsure and lost regarding their identity!

•This is completely unacceptable. No empathy or grace has been showed towards a marginalised community, and causes great harm to many students and people!

Shame on UoR and the Vice Chancellor. This is unprofessional, unacceptable and shamefully bigoted.

Trans rights are human rights!
