Revive Woodruff's Butterfly Garden for Scott Pile

The Issue

Scott Pile, along with his friends spent countless hours in the butterfly garden at Woodruff School in Berkeley Heights, NJ. This garden was more than just a small piece of nature surrounded by brick and concrete; it was a sanctuary of laughter and memories. From playing hide and seek among the bushes, leaping from tile to tile, to witnessing butterflies dance around the milkweeds, it was a haven of cherishing childhood innocence.
In honor of Scott, it is vital to bring back the butterfly garden as a memorial at Woodruff. Scott, who attended Woodruff from 2nd to 5th grade, found solace and happiness in this garden. It stood as a symbol of his formative years, a place where he, along with his friends, nurtured dreams and cherished friendship. Sadly, when the art teacher and the principal who appreciated the garden left, it was soon discarded and abandoned, leading to its ultimate removal.

This petition seeks to persuade the Board of Education to restore the butterfly garden at Woodruff School, allowing for the memories and legacy of Scott Pile to live on and inspire future generations of Berkeley Heights students. Nature has a profound way of healing, and in these times, bringing back the butterflies can offer hope and continuity.

In addition to honoring Scott’s memory, reviving the butterfly garden would serve as an educational tool, teaching children about ecology, biology, and the essential role butterflies play in our ecosystem. Butterflies symbolize transformation and renewal, mirroring the journey of many young students who walk through the halls of Woodruff. Many children used to spend their days looking forward to when they could raise butterflies and release them in the garden, or create art projects to display among the flowers.

Please sign this petition to urge the Board of Education to take the necessary steps to restore this beloved garden to its former glory. Let us bring the butterflies home to Woodruff and keep Scott’s memory and spirit alive in the heart of our community. We also urge you to donate to www.nami.org in Scott’s honor.
