Revive Memorial University men's varsity volleyball
The Issue
As a student at Memorial University, I've witnessed firsthand the barriers our male athletes face when their journey ends abruptly at high school graduation. The disbandment of the Men’s Varsity Volleyball team at Memorial University in 2017 left a gap that has deeply impacted our community, athletes, and aspiring young men.
The women's volleyball team continues to thrive, setting an example and providing opportunities that should also be available to our male athletes. The absence of a men's team means that many talented players must choose to leave their families and our province, seeking opportunities elsewhere, often at great financial and emotional cost. This exodus not only erodes the local talent pool but also diminishes the cultural vitality that sports impart.
Restoring the Memorial University Sea-Hawks Men’s Volleyball team is more than just bringing back competitive sports; it's about nurturing homegrown talent and investing in the future of Newfoundland and Labrador athletes. Our young men deserve the chance to represent their university, thrive in their sport, and inspire the next generation – all while remaining in their home province.
Statistics show that participation in university sports positively affects academic performance, mental health, and community engagement. Reviving the men’s volleyball team would strengthen our university’s reputation, increase student engagement, and attract more athletes to Memorial University. It’s a win-win situation for the university and the province alike.
The 2017 budget cuts are in the past, and it's time to look forward with a renewed focus on inclusivity and opportunity. We propose reallocating existing sports funding to ensure both male and female athletes have equal opportunities, seeking sponsorship from local businesses, and launching fundraising initiatives to support the team’s return.
By supporting this petition, you are standing up for every young volleyball player in Newfoundland and Labrador dreaming of a chance to play at the university level. Let's bring back the pride of the Sea-Hawks and showcase our incredible talent right here at home.
