The issue

As a parent of teenage children in Bendigo, I am deeply concerned about the increasing crime rates in our city centre. Our children deserve a safe environment where they can freely shop and socialise with friends without fear. Unfortunately, the current state of our city centre, particularly around Hargreaves Mall, fails to offer that security.

The once bustling streets have become a shadow of their former selves, as businesses struggle under economic pressures. If this decline continues unchecked, we risk losing the very local small businesses that embody the heart and heritage of Bendigo. It is imperative that we act now to prevent this economic and cultural loss.

To address these issues and help breathe new life into our beloved city centre, Don McKinnon along with several other dedicated locals have drafted a proposal for the redevelopment of Hargreaves Mall as a crucial first step. By opening the Killians Walk SE side of the paved area to single-lane, one-way traffic complemented by parallel parking, we can revitalise the area while ensuring safety and accessibility. Incorporating traffic lights at the exit to Mitchell Street will help control the flow of vehicles, maintaining order and reducing congestion. Crucially, this plan preserves the existing playground and greenery, maintaining the balance between development and natural beauty.

This proposal not only aims to reduce criminal behaviour but also revitalises our economic landscape by attracting visitors and boosting local businesses. Such changes can lead to a vibrant community hub that fosters social connections, supports local heritage, and caters to residents and tourists alike.

I urge the Bendigo Council and the wider community to consider supporting this proposed City Centre Redevelopment (Stage 1). It is a step towards transforming our city centre into a safe, prosperous, and culturally rich destination once more. Let's support our local economy and create a secure environment for our children.

If you to want change, we ask for you to please sign this petition to show the Bendigo Council that our community stands united and are ready for positive change.
