Hello,
I am contacting you to ask for your help and support at a once in a generation turning point in the protection of the Humber River.
As you are all aware the Toronto Humber Yacht Club's lease on the shores of the Humber River ended in July of this year. In June of this year, THYC did receive a letter of non-renewal from the city indicating their lease was coming to an end.
Although this was very exciting news for the community, I'm under the impression this recommendation is just that, a recommendation and is only the first step in a very long process to officially end the lease.
THYCs poor environmental stewardship of the public lands they are privileged to occupy is well documented as is the club members' aggressive and abusive treatment of the general public both on and off the water.
The ongoing and chronic delays in finalizing the Staff Report's recommendation to end THYC's lease is raising considerable concern within the community. This is especially true in light of the fact THYC has been very outspoken in their belief their lease will be renewed as they are claiming to be in productive talks with the city.
The club's claims to be in talks with the city and the the fact the club as made no effort whatsoever to remove themselves from the property combined with the ongoing delays in presenting the staff report to the governance committee seem to give credence to THYC's claims.
Please raise your voice in council and with city staff in support of ending THYC's lease so that the property can either be re-naturalized or transformed into an environmentally sustainable and community focused space.
With this in mind, please use your voices to encourage the Governance Committed to put the Staff Report on its agenda for Dec 8. It's time to stop the delays and start moving in a direction that allows for action.
Thank you for your time and attention!
