The Issue

The current English-only policy in dining services at the College of the Holy Cross is an issue that deserves immediate attention. For many Spanish-speaking staff members, language is not just a tool for communication—it is a core part of their identity, culture, and daily expression. Restricting their ability to speak their native language, except when absolutely necessary for job-related functions, can feel exclusionary and, in some cases, potentially discriminatory.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 41 million people in the United States speak Spanish at home, making it the second most spoken language in the country. At an institution like the College of the Holy Cross, which emphasizes inclusivity, dignity, and respect for all members of its community, the enforcement of such a policy appears misaligned with these core values. Our campus benefits from the cultural richness and diverse perspectives that multilingual staff bring every day.

Research has shown that linguistically inclusive work environments contribute to higher job satisfaction, stronger team collaboration, and improved employee retention. Allowing staff to use their native language in appropriate settings acknowledges their humanity and fosters a greater sense of belonging. This not only supports staff well-being but also strengthens the overall campus community.

We respectfully urge the administration at the College of the Holy Cross to revisit and revise the current English-only policy. A more thoughtful and flexible approach—one that balances effective communication with cultural respect—would better reflect the values our institution stands for. Policies that encourage bilingual communication, provide language support, and promote cultural understanding would create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

By supporting this effort, you are advocating for a campus that truly reflects its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Let us ensure that all members of our community, including dining services staff, feel respected, valued, and heard.
