Revision of Policy Involving Generative AI at KU School of Nursing

Revision of Policy Involving Generative AI at KU School of Nursing
The Issue
What are You Signing?
A student-led petition to create additional parameters to generative AI policy at the University of Kansas School of Nursing that places regulations on the use of ChatGPT and other LLMs (Large Language Models) in the classroom setting by both faculty and students.
At this time (10/17/25), lectures and assignments include the use of ChatGPT, but stricter parameters guiding its use are needed.
What This Petition is NOT:
An argument for the creation of policy on what happens outside of the classroom setting.
Why Should You Care?
AI-generated lectures and assignments impede students’ learning and generate confusion, delaying valuable class time.
By its very nature, LLMs cannot be used as a reference. Models like OpenAI scrape vast amounts of data from the internet without any transparency on its specific sources unless prompted to do so.
Signing this petition ensures the preservation of high-quality education to future nurses and advocates for the health of Kansas.
According to Shaolei Ren of UC Riverside, it is estimated that 5-50 prompts into ChatGPT requires roughly the same amount of water to fill a 16 oz. water bottle. With unregulated use, negative environmental impacts occur. An Open Letter to the University of Kansas School of Nursing Administration
As outlined in the petition, we respectfully request that the school administration create additional parameters regarding the use of ChatGPT and other LLMs (Large Language Models) by teachers and students alike in lectures, class assignments, as well as all other teaching and learning material.
When teachers and students rely on AI, it creates a feedback loop. When teachers outsource their teaching material to AI and students outsource their learning, the classroom becomes a simulacrum of a learning environment. Further, by its very nature LLMs cannot be used as a reference. Models like OpenAI scrape vast amounts of data from the internet without any transparency on its specific sources unless prompted to do so. For this reason, ChatGPT is an unreliable source that does not belong in any classroom. We are concerned about the ramifications of the use of AI. All users of generative AI are at risk of a loss of individual critical thinking, the ability to integrate ideas on their own, and memorization. Community members have stated they feel unsafe knowing that future nurses will be taught with the use of AI in the classrooms. Students report confusion during classroom due to AI hallucinations in assignment instructions that impede their learning. For these reasons, we recommend that policy be revised regarding the use of AI in lectures, homework, in-class work, and all other learning material not mentioned. To address any concerns about the revision of the policy, we suggest incorporating student feedback in the shaping of clear, enforceable rules and providing updated training for staff and students on the importance of using credible sources that addresses the use of AI.
The petition’s support reflects the community’s strong interest in ensuring that future nurses continue to receive a high-quality education taught from highly-experienced nursing faculty. At the core of nursing lies humanity and connection. With your help and understanding, we hope that we can work to ensure that the future of nursing continues to remain people-centered, first and foremost.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
