Revise the Series Bolívar for Historical Inaccuracy and Exclusion of Haiti’s Crucial Role

The Issue

We, the undersigned, demand the immediate removal or significant revision of the Netflix series Bolívar, which grossly misrepresents historical events and omits critical contributions that shaped the liberation of Latin America (Gran Columbia) from Spanish rule.

The series glorifies Simón Bolívar as the liberator of South America while completely ignoring the pivotal role played by Haiti and President Alexandre Pétion in supporting Bolívar’s revolutionary efforts. This omission is not only a distortion of history but an erasure and a disrespect to Haiti's monumental contribution to the liberation of Latin America.

The Historical Context Netflix Ignored
In 1815, Simón Bolívar sought refuge in Haiti after being defeated by Spanish forces. President Alexandre Pétion of Haiti not only offered Bolívar sanctuary but also provided him with soldiers, weapons, and critical resources to continue the fight for South American independence. Pétion did this with one simple request: Bolívar should ensure the abolition of slavery in liberated territories.

Haiti, a nation born from the world's first successful slave revolt, played an unparalleled role in inspiring and materially supporting independence movements across the Americas. Pétion’s contributions were fundamental to Bolívar’s eventual success.

Yet, in the Netflix series Bolívar, this significant alliance and the sacrifices made by Haiti and its people are completely erased. This omission perpetuates a Eurocentric narrative that sidelines Black and Caribbean contributions to world history.

Why This Matters

  • Historical Accuracy: By omitting Haiti's involvement, the series presents an incomplete and misleading account of Bolívar’s journey.
  • Recognition of Haiti’s Role: The erasure of Haiti’s contributions undermines its legacy as a beacon of freedom and independence in the Americas.
  • Representation Matters: The failure to acknowledge the contributions of Black leaders reinforces systemic biases in historical storytelling and perpetuates the marginalization of Black and Caribbean histories.

Our Demands

  • Netflix must acknowledge the historical inaccuracies in Bolívar and issue a public statement recognizing Haiti and Alexandre Pétion's contributions to the liberation of Gran Colombia.
  • The series should be revised to include these omitted historical facts or be removed entirely from the platform for its lack of accuracy.
  • Netflix must commit to greater diversity and accuracy in its historical productions moving forward.
