As an active citizen, I am deeply affected by the current state of our nation regarding gun violence and firearms' accessibility. Our founding fathers who drafted the Constitution could not have anticipated the evolution of modern firearms, nor the disturbing extent of gun violence that ensues today. Our sociopolitical reality is full of harrowing examples of assault weapons used in mass shootings, and the alarming ease with which potentially dangerous individuals can obtain firearms.

We must recognize that our current interpretation of a “well-regulated militia,” defined by the Second Amendment, is arguably antiquated and misaligned with the realities of 21st-century America.
