Revise the Outdated Control of Greyhounds Act (Northern Ireland) 1950

The Issue

This law mandates that all sight-hounds, including greyhounds, whippets and lurchers must be muzzled at all times and cannot be off lead in public places. Additionally, it limits walking only two such dogs at any one time.

This act is not just outdated but also ignores the gentle nature of these breeds. It is important to note that Northern Ireland stands alone in enforcing this law within the UK and Ireland. The current legislation fails to consider that an increasing number of sighthounds are kept as domestic pets rather than for racing purposes. These dogs are not trained to race but are loving companions in our homes.

The existing law inadvertently creates a negative stereotype (within Northern Ireland only) around these breeds making it difficult for rescue organisations to rehome them. A modern revision is required which takes into account the changing role these breeds play in our society today.

We urge lawmakers in Northern Ireland to revise this antiquated act so as not only ensure fair treatment for the breed but also encourage responsible pet ownership without unnecessary restrictions or stereotypes attached. Reevaluation is crucial to align legislation with modern principles of responsible dog ownership.

Please sign this petition if you believe that this breed deserves fair laws and regulations throughout the UK and Ireland alike, especially those who have been unfairly targeted due their breeds historical roles rather than their current status as beloved pets.
