Revise the National Curriculum for Primary Schools

Revise the National Curriculum for Primary Schools
The Issue
Working as a teaching assistant and being a parent to young children, I've witnessed firsthand the immense pressure placed on both students and teachers in our current education system. The extensive curriculum demands too much from our primary school children, often leading to challenging behaviors and stressed students. The current setup leaves little room for activities that could foster positive development and excitement, like the cherished 'golden hour.'
The pressure of adhering to a packed curriculum not only affects the mental well-being of students but also burdens teachers who are striving to keep up with the demands. The emphasis on academic achievement overshadows the importance of social and emotional growth, leaving children overwhelmed and less engaged.
Incorporating more 'golden hours' or dedicated time for positive behavior reinforcement could help alleviate some of these pressures. Such initiatives could serve to balance educational requirements with the necessary freedom for children to explore, create, and relax—offering them something tangible to look forward to during their school days.
Studies show that school environments promoting balanced curricula with a focus on emotional well-being result in happier, more productive students. The Finnish education system, known for its less rigorous and more balanced approach, consistently ranks as one of the best in the world and could serve as a model for us.
It is crucial to reevaluate our national curriculum to better support teachers and foster an environment that encourages well-rounded student development. Such changes will not only improve classroom behavior but also create a healthier, happier future for our children.
Please join me in calling upon policymakers to review and revise the national curriculum for primary schools. Sign this petition to advocate for a more comprehensive and balanced approach to education in our schools.
