After further investigation and direct communication with UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and reviewing their certifications, it has been proven that not a single electric skateboard currently available on the market meets the specific UL certification requirements mandated by Florida Tech’s new policy. Florida Institute of Technology has officially banned electric skateboards.
The ban forces students who have already invested in electric skateboards to either abandon their devices or face penalties, despite having no access to alternative models that meet the school’s new requirements.
The few scooters and e-bikes that do meet the standards are expensive and may not be a practical option for many students. This further exacerbates the economic burden on those who simply wish to commute sustainably.
The current policy is not just impractical but also exclusionary, disproportionately affecting students based on their financial capability to switch to these limited, high-cost alternatives.
