Revise South Australian Strata Laws to Permit Pets

Revise South Australian Strata Laws to Permit Pets
The issue
South Australia is home to thousands of pet lovers who understand the significant benefits that come with pet ownership. Pets enrich our lives, offering companionship, improving mental health, and even decreasing the risk of heart disease. Yet, for residents in strata communities across the state, the ability to own a pet is unfairly treated as a privilege rather than the right it should be.
Current strata laws in South Australia gives power to the owners corporations to impose a blanket ban on pet ownership in many complexes, disregarding the values of modern Australian society where pets are considered integral family members. Such restrictions are outdated and fail to align with the country's progressive ethos towards pet ownership, which supports pets in households across all types of living arrangements. NSW, VIC, ACT, WA & QLD have already changed their laws to disallow blanket bans on pets in Strata communities leaving SA behind the times.
Allowing pets in strata communities is not only a compassionate choice but also an economically sensible one. The pet industry contributes billions to the national economy, and enabling pet ownership boosts market demand, aiding businesses and creating jobs. Additionally, landlords of pet-friendly properties often experience longer tenancies and reduced turnover rates, leading to more stable communities.
To rectify this imbalance and champion a more inclusive and realistic standard, South Australia must amend its strata laws to embrace pet ownership in strata communities. This change will reflect the current Australian standards and national sentiment favoring pets' roles in our lives.
We urge the South Australian government to act now and reform these outdated laws. It's time to show that our community values the welfare of both its human and animal members by allowing people the right to have pets in their homes within strata communities. Sign this petition to advocate for a fairer, pet-friendly South Australia.
If you have the time I urge you to write to Minister Andrea Michaels to ask for this change, you can contact her at https://www.andreamichaels.com.au/contact/
