Revise regulations for free bus passes in Scotland for under 16's

The Issue

As a parent to a teenage son under the age of 16, I have personally faced numerous issues regarding the use of free bus passes offered to children and teenagers within Scotland. While these bus passes are a commendable initiative that significantly reduces costs for families and encourages the use of public transport, the lack of restrictions associated with them has become a matter of concern.

One of the primary issues is the absence of any restrictions on the times during which these passes can be used. Without time limitations, children and teenagers can travel unaccompanied during late hours, potentially putting themselves in dangerous situations. Furthermore, there are no restrictions on the areas children can travel to, meaning they can access potentially unsafe zones without parental guidance or supervision.

As a parent, the safety and well-being of my children are of utmost importance. The current unrestricted access granted by these bus passes may inadvertently expose children to various risks, including the possibility of encountering unfamiliar or unsafe environments and situations . It's crucial that we balance the benefits of these passes with the necessary safeguards to ensure the safety of our young ones.

I propose that the Scottish government and relevant authorities consider implementing regulations that limit the hours during which these bus passes can be used by unaccompanied minors. Additionally, introducing specific zones or areas where children can travel unaccompanied would help in maintaining a safe environment for them. Simple changes such as these can go a long way in enhancing the security of our children while still maintaining the benefits of the free travel scheme.

This would also benefit the help in reducing antisocial behaviours as due to the advantage of travel children are travelling far and wide and the increase in antisocial problems whether it be in various locations or on our buses where the wider public have the right to feel safe are a risk.

Together, let's urge the authorities to make these necessary changes for the safety of all our children. By signing this petition, you add your voice to a growing number of concerned individuals who believe in a balanced approach to public transport access for minors.
