Revise Military Enlistment Policies Regarding Prior Bariatric Surgery
The Issue
I am one of many who has been denied the privilege to serve our country due to a previous medical decision, bariatric surgery. This measure, often taken to ensure better health, is paradoxically a barrier for those wishing to join the military. The enlistment policy currently views such surgery as a risk factor, despite numerous studies asserting the long-term stability after bariatric surgery.
According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, individuals who underwent this procedure showed significant improvements in their overall health and reduction of obesity-related conditions. While we acknowledge the military's stringent health requirements, it is crucial to understand that those who successfully underwent bariatric surgery did so to improve their health, often achieving results that exceed traditional weight management.
The *American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS)* reported an increase in the number of metabolic and bariatric procedures performed in the United States, rising from approximately *262,893 in 2021 to 280,000 in 2022*. This reflects a growing trend in the adoption of these surgical procedures for weight loss and metabolic health improvement.
Therefore, we call on the relevant authorities to review and amend the enlistment policies relating to bariatric surgery. It is important to ensure that all fit, willing, and able Americans can join the military – regardless of past medical procedures that had the aim of improving the health of an individual. Grant them the opportunity to contribute to our country's defense – your signature can pave the path forward. Sign the petition.
