Revise Ethiopian higher education policy and proclamation regarding Academic Technical Ass

The Issue

For the past several years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Academic Chief Laboratory Technician at Bahir Dar University. In addition, I am honoured to be the President of the Amhara Region Universities Academic Technical Professionals Association and a Coordinator working towards establishing the Ethiopian Universities Academic Technical Professionals Association. During my tenure, I've witnessed first-hand the numerous challenges and gaps within the Ethiopian higher education system, which I believe can be addressed through policy revisions.

The current higher education policy and proclamation in Ethiopia fail to adequately support the academic technical professionals who play a crucial role in shaping the educational experiences of students. Without a proper framework that recognises and empowers these professionals, we are hampered in our mission to provide quality education and facilitate innovation.

One major issue is the lack of clear policies that define the roles, responsibilities, and career advancement pathways for academic technical staff. Many are left in ambiguous positions without clear prospects for professional development or promotion, which not only affects their morale but also the overall educational quality provided to our students. Additionally, there is a lack of resources allocated for technical professional development and collaboration, which is vital for staying current with technological and educational advancements.

It's time that we address these gaps by revising the Ethiopian Higher Education policy and proclamation to provide clear career pathways, appropriate recognition, and necessary resources for academic technical professionals. This revision must include input from all stakeholders, ensuring that voices from different regions and roles within the education sector are considered.

The success of our higher education system lies not only in the hands of educators but also within the multifaceted support systems that academic technical professionals provide. By investing in these crucial team members, we invest in the future of our nation's education and innovation.

I urge policymakers, educational leaders, and all stakeholders to consider these critical changes. By signing this petition, you support the call for a revision of the Ethiopian higher education policy and proclamation. Together, we can create a more inclusive and empowered educational environment for all.
