Revise Cell Phone Policy in the Coeur d'Alene School District

Revise Cell Phone Policy in the Coeur d'Alene School District
The Issue
The new PED policy put in place by the Coeur d'Alene School District is unreasonable. Banning PED's at lunch and passing period is outrageous. It is understood that PED's can negatively impact students socially and academically in the classroom. However, banning cell phones during lunch and passing periods goes against the negative academic impacts. Many of us students now use cell phones to socialize, as the large amounts of technical advancements in the past decade have changed how most groups, and especially the youth socialize. Although this policy may seem justified, it is going against modern innovation with media and socialization. Many students during passing periods and lunch use their phones to bond with others and create friendships. For example, numerous students bond with their friends by playing games on phones together during lunch, while it is NOT affecting their learning. Allowing students to play games during lunches also allows built up energy from focusing in previous classes to be released in order for larger amounts of focus for subsequent classes. Lunch for students should be a time to decompress and not be held to a strict rulebook, especially because PED's are how some, if not how most students decompress. Overall, the prohibition of the use of PED's during lunch and passing period should be revoked in order to foster better friendships and continue helping create a balance of having the time of the day to enjoy ourselves, and having a time of the day to work hard.
