Revise CAFE Standards for Safer, More Efficient Non-Commercial Vehicles

Revise CAFE Standards for Safer, More Efficient Non-Commercial Vehicles
The Issue
As a concerned citizen deeply involved in public safety, economic stability and environmental welfare, I believe that we urgently need to revise our Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. Our roads and highways are populated with vehicles that are too large, too heavy, and too inefficient. These behemoths do not just pose risks for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists, but they also pose substantial threats to other smaller cars.
Current regulations clearly do not prioritize the safety or fuel efficiency. The Liberty Mutual Insurance Pedestrian Safety Study from 2013 revealed an astounding 60% increase in pedestrian fatalities from accidents with larger vehicles. This is an alarming trend that needs to be addressed.
Moreover, such oversized, inefficient vehicles cause immense strain on our infrastructure. As per the American Society of Civil Engineers' 2017 Report, our highways are systematically wearing out due to the stress caused by these heavier vehicles, leading to a whopping $170 billion in backlog funds needed for road repairs.
Not to mention, the environmental impact of such vehicles is severe. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, increased weight and size of personal vehicles in the US contribute significantly to rising carbon dioxide emissions. We need smaller, lighter, and more efficient vehicles to safeguard our environment and meet climate change goals.
We, therefore, call for an urgent revision of the current CAFE standards. One that implements set limits on the weight, height, and wheelbase (footprint) for all non-commercial vehicles to levels similar to that of standard passenger cars. This will not only prioritize pedestrian and vehicle safety but also mitigate the rapid wear and tear on our roads thus reducing maintenance expenses. Most importantly, it will make a significant contribution to reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.
