Review why UK job opportunities are changing and publish a workforce plan
We ask the Government to assess how overseas sourcing of services, artificial intelligence, automation and changing business models are collectively affecting the number and type of jobs available to people in the UK, and to publish a workforce transition plan in response.
Many people are finding it harder to enter work, change careers or secure entry level opportunities. At the same time, businesses are increasingly using overseas services, automation and artificial intelligence to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
These changes can benefit businesses, consumers and the wider economy. We do not believe companies should be blamed for making legitimate commercial decisions.
However, Government should understand the combined effect these changes are having on employment opportunities in the UK.
The assessment should examine:
• which jobs are being lost, changed or created
• which sectors and occupations are most affected
• whether entry level opportunities and traditional career pathways are reducing
• whether people whose jobs are affected can realistically move into the new jobs being created
• whether education, training and retraining are preparing people for future employment
• whether current economic and employment policies are keeping pace with these changes
It is not enough to measure how many people are looking for work.
Government should also understand how the demand for people to work in the UK is changing, and what action is needed to ensure the workforce is prepared for that transition.
