We, the undersigned, call on the government to review and reform the current First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, which is fundamentally flawed and no longer serves the best interests of our democracy. The time has come to replace FPTP with a system that ensures fairer, more accurate representation for all voters.

Why Reform is Necessary:

Disproportionate Outcomes: Under the FPTP system, the number of seats a party wins often bears little relation to the percentage of votes they actually receive. This leads to scenarios where a party with a minority of the popular vote can still secure a majority of seats and form a government, leaving large portions of the electorate underrepresented.
Voter Disenfranchisement: FPTP encourages tactical voting and results in many votes being effectively "wasted," particularly in safe seats where the outcome is already decided. Voters in such districts are often left feeling that their vote does not matter, leading to lower voter engagement and a weakened sense of civic responsibility.
Unrepresentative Outcomes: The FPTP system tends to marginalize smaller parties and the diversity of opinion they represent. This can stifle political plurality, limit voter choice, and create an artificial two-party system that fails to reflect the diverse views of the population.
Polarization and Division: FPTP often exacerbates political polarization by incentivizing parties to appeal to their base rather than seeking broad consensus. This can lead to more extreme rhetoric and policies, undermining efforts to build a truly inclusive, representative government.
A Fairer System of Representation:

We believe that reforming the electoral system to introduce Proportional Representation (PR), or a similar system that ensures votes are more accurately translated into seats, would result in a number of benefits:

More Accurate Representation: PR systems give all parties, regardless of size, the chance to win seats in proportion to the number of votes they receive, ensuring that no group is unfairly excluded.
Greater Voter Choice: A fairer system allows voters to support the party or candidate that best reflects their views without the fear of "wasting" their vote.
Increased Voter Engagement: With a system that better reflects the diversity of opinions in the electorate, more citizens will feel their vote truly matters, leading to higher voter turnout and stronger civic participation.
Fostering Consensus Politics: Proportional systems encourage coalition-building and collaboration across political lines, leading to more stable and less divisive governments.
What We Ask:

We urge lawmakers to commission a comprehensive review of the current FPTP system and its impact on democracy, with the goal of transitioning to a fairer, more representative electoral process. We ask that this review prioritize the introduction of Proportional Representation or another reform that would ensure all voices are heard and accurately reflected in our Parliament.

Democracy thrives when all citizens feel that their vote counts, and that their voice is part of the political conversation. It is time for a change. We deserve an electoral system that serves the people, not just the powerful.
