Environment and Food Protection Areas at risk

Protect South Australia's Prime Agricultural Land – Stop the Rezoning and Urban Sprawl!

The government plan to allow development on protected land, including at Victor Harbor, Middleton, Goolwa, Roseworthy and Two Wells (the Environment and Food Protection Areas at risk are shown in green on the attached map).

Greater Adelaide is already one of the longest cities in the world, stretching over 10,873 km² with only 139 people/km², compared to Melbourne (508/km²) & Sydney (428/km²).

Our food security and environment are at risk! The Planning Infrastructure and Development (Environment and Food Protection) Bill recently introduced by Labor's Planning Minister Nick Champion in the South Australian Parliament proposes rezoning 7,324 hectares of prime agricultural land for housing development—land essential for food production and long-term sustainability.

We cannot afford to sacrifice our productive farming land and damage our environment through poorly planned urban sprawl. The consequences of this Bill are far-reaching, including that it:

Threatens food security through uncontrolled URBAN SPRAWL – reducing our capacity to grow produce.
- Comes at a high cost to taxpayers – requiring expensive public infrastructure (water, power, roads, hospitals, schools) while jeopardizing long-term sustainability.
- Is another example of poor planning & infrastructure look at Mt Barker! Growth with no real investment in roads, transport, or services.
- Traffic & Congestion Nightmare – Isolated developments (ghettos) force people into cars, worsening gridlock instead of building a thriving, connected Adelaide.
- Does not consider water scarcity issues and future drought conditions.
- Adelaide Should Grow From Its Centre – A strong CBD means more jobs, successful businesses, and a vibrant city—not endless, unsustainable sprawl.
- Diana Laidlaw Warned Us – In 1999, her 'Green Paper' called for higher density and limits on sprawl.  Be part of Shaping our Future.

We must push for smart growth, better planning, and sustainable development—not another planning disaster!

We urge State Parliament to vote against the Bill to allow rezoning of the Environment and Food Protection Areas and call on the State Government to conduct a full review of this proposal, including the economic, environmental, and infrastructure costs associated with rezoning Environment and Food Protection Areas. The future of South Australia’s food security and environment depends on it.
