As a social worker supporting women and children, I am deeply troubled by the current state of protection offered against family and sexual violence in New South Wales. It is appalling to note that more women die from violence than from shark attacks, yet our government chooses to allocate more funding to drones than to effectively combat this epidemic. This disparity in funding and attention highlights a grave misalignment in our priorities as a society, where the safety of women and children is sidelined.

Statistics from the Australian Institute of Criminology indicate that one in six women has experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or former partner. Research shows that in New South Wales, at least two women are hospitalised every day due to family violence-related assaults. Despite these harrowing numbers, the resources and urgency with which these cases are handled often fall short.

The New South Wales Police Force is a crucial frontline defense against the rising tide of domestic and sexual violence. However, the current strategies and responses are clearly inadequate, evidenced by the growing number of victims who do not receive timely support and protection. It’s imperative that we re-evaluate and enhance how these serious issues are addressed by the police.

We call for a comprehensive review of the NSW Police’s responses to family and sexual violence. This review should include consultation with domestic violence experts, social workers, survivors, and community organisations to build an insightful and effective framework for future policing practices. It must focus on training officers to better identify and respond to these cases, improving victim support and ensuring accountability and transparency within law enforcement.

In reallocating funds and attention towards tackling the root causes and improving the police response, we can save lives. By valuing the safety and dignity of women and children more than technological advancements that serve only purported threats, we stand to change systemic flaws with lasting positive impact.
