The Issue

The United States Department of Defense currently upholds medical enlistment standards that exclude individuals with celiac disease from serving in the military. Celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects approximately 1% of the global population, results in damage to the small intestine when gluten is ingested. While manageable through a strict gluten-free diet, those living with this condition face a blanket disqualification from military service due to current health regulations.

This policy is outdated and does not reflect the advances in medical understanding and dietary management that have made it possible for individuals with celiac disease to lead full, healthy lives. Many people with celiac disease can maintain excellent health and fitness levels, adhering to a gluten-free diet without issue. The blanket ban denies patriotic individuals the right to serve their country, solely based on a condition that can be effectively managed.

Countries such as Canada and the UK allow individuals with celiac disease to serve in their military, provided they demonstrate their ability to manage their condition. The U.S. military already accommodates dietary restrictions for religious and other medical needs. Implementing a policy that permits service by individuals able to maintain their health through dietary control would align the U.S. military with these modern practices.

We propose a detailed review of the existing medical enlistment standards to accommodate individuals with celiac disease. This review should consider exemptions or waivers for those whose condition is well-managed through diet and who meet all other physical and psychological requirements for service.

By taking this step, we will not only allow individuals with celiac disease to serve their country but also embrace a more inclusive and diverse military force. We call upon the members of Congress, the Department of Defense, and other relevant officials to take immediate action by revisiting and updating these outdated policies.

Sign this petition to support a reevaluation of military enlistment policies, ensuring that capable individuals with celiac disease have the opportunity to serve our nation.
