Revert the YouTube ad blocker crackdown

The Issue

Recently, YouTube has been starting to block users from viewing content if they are using an ad blocker. YouTube already shows an absurd amount of advertisements before every video if you don't have an ad blocker enabled, often having to wait over 20 seconds for the video to actually start playing.

Why YouTube blocking ad blockers is a bad thing:

  • If you don't have a great WiFi signal, the advertisement will play, and take its sweet time to buffer, which means you are just waiting for the ad to load even though there is already more of the video itself buffered. This just adds to the annoyance and time spent waiting for ads to play.
  • The FBI has said that the internet is a safer place with ad blockers. This is because there are lots of misleading advertisements everywhere, even on YouTube. For example, there are fake Mr. Beast ads that claim to give you $250 or $500, or something along those lines for just signing up for a service. Those ads aren't even run by Mr. Beast, however they impersonate him to try and trick people into thinking this is some official thing.
  • YouTube Premium is very expensive, and not very worth it. At this current point in time, YouTube Premium is $13.99 USD PER MONTH. This totals to almost $170 USD per year, not including taxes. This is absurd pricing for the average user, especially if you only use it for things such as looking up tutorials and such.
  • Ad blockers have been shown from studies to use less bandwidth and therefore save energy. Because of this, YouTube banning ad blockers can technically slightly increase the rate of global warming, which is something none of us want.

Reasons YouTube blocking ad blockers is a good thing:

  • YouTube (and in turn Alphabet) gets more money...? Is that really a good thing? They are already billion dollar companies, do they really need THAT much more money?
  • Creators get paid a little bit more money because less people are using ad blocker. However, there will likely be less people on the platform as some people will stop using it because of this change, so some creators may actually get paid less after this change.

If action isn't taken soon, then chances are YouTube will see this as a success and keep it around for the foreseeable future. If ad blockers are banned and stay that way, then there are very few, if any positives for the average user.
