The Issue

Goose Creek CISD’s new dress code sends the message that boys and girls should be held to different standards of personal appearance. Under the policy, boys with shoulder-length hair can face disciplinary action, while girls with identical hair length cannot. The policy does not explain how a hairstyle that is acceptable for one student suddenly becomes disruptive simply because another student is male.

Public schools should apply rules fairly and equally to all students. A student’s hairstyle does not determine their character, academic ability, or respect for others. While schools have a responsibility to maintain an appropriate learning environment, those standards should be based on safety, professionalism, and behavior, not different expectations for boys and girls.

This dress code represents a significant departure from the standards GCCISD students have followed for years. Rather than creating unnecessary divisions and enforcing appearance standards based on sex, GCCISD should restore the previous dress code while working with students, parents, teachers, and the community to develop policies that are fair, evidence-based, and applied equally to everyone.

We are not asking for the elimination of a dress code. We are asking GCCISD to revert the newly adopted policy and replace it with one that treats all students equally, respects personal expression, and focuses on what truly matters: education, safety, and student success.
