Revert Speed Cameras Back to High Visibility for Enhanced Road Safety

Revert Speed Cameras Back to High Visibility for Enhanced Road Safety
The Issue
We call upon our local, regional, and national lawmakers to revert all speed cameras, including mobile camera vans, back to a high visibility scheme. The original purpose of speed cameras was to promote road safety and to deter speeding. High-visibility cameras were effective in achieving this goal, as they visibly reminded drivers to abide by the speed limit. However, recently, the shift towards low-visibility cameras has led many to question their intention. These hidden or low-visibility cameras give credence to the notion that they are more oriented towards revenue generation than enhancing road safety.
In the UK, for example, speed cameras have generated £54 million in 2018 alone (Department for Transport, UK). While fines for speeding are a necessary deterrent, the evident shift towards low-visibility speed cameras raises questions about their real purpose. By reverting to high visibility cameras, authorities can reassure the public that the primary objective of these devices is to ensure road safety rather than simply raising revenue.
We urge our lawmakers to remember that safety cameras should play a critical role in shaping responsible driving behaviors, rather than acting as a 'cash-cow' for the institutions involved. We demand transparency, fairness, and a return to the original purpose of speed cameras by making them high visibility again. Please sign this petition to show your support for this crucial change.
